For the members of the
Celestial Armies depicted here the struggle for life
is a perpetual battle against Satan and his servants. This millennial
movement of the Haitian urban poor is more than a Christian cult
that
promises their followers future paradise, it is a means of defense
against
the violence of poverty and exclusion. The scene in this church
reminds me of
the thousands of Haitian 'boat people' who every year risk their
lives in a
desperate attempt to reach the paradise of American shores. Like
them, these
fervent Christians are often lost in the turbulent seas.
