The traditional image
of the Virgin is identified by Haitian Vodouists as the
spirit Erzulie. In Vodou, Erzulie is not the ideal of purity of
the Christian
Virgin but a sensual and desiring woman. This phenomenon is an
example of the
appropriation of colonial symbols by Haitians through a process
of visual
syncretism.
