These paintings depict
the situation of the Haitian cane cutters in the
Dominican Republic. Reflecting their customary concern for the
welfare of the
Haitian people, the Duvalier government agreed to "sell"
Haitian workers to
the Dominicans. Thousands of Haitians continue to work in slave-like
conditions in the Dominican cane fields called 'batey.'
